Today’s cue sheet offered a number of additional side trips which we wanted to explore. We started off with an unlisted 5-mile (round trip on a dirt road) side trip at mile 4, to visit the Magpie River Falls. It was well worth it – check out the photo.
The next big listed stop on the route was at Old Woman’s Bay at mile 30 – not sure how it got its name, but the views were spectacular – Serge and Pierre Alain decided to press on so I stopped to get a shore side view.
That involved removing my shoes and socks and wading knee deep into Lake Superior to get a shot of how clear the waters are – Lake Superior must have some of the clearest water in the world.
The next stop was to see the pictographs on the cliffs at Agawa Bay. It was well worth the 5 mile side trip, but the walk down to the shore is definitely not “Wheelchair Accessible”, nor is it recommended to walk the path in bike shoes. It was rocky and steep – on the way back I decided to walk it barefoot so I wouldn’t wrench my knee or break my neck.
The clear waters by the cliffs were too tempting so I doffed my bike shirt helmet and electronics (camera and iTouch) and went in for a quick dip. The water was great – it looked about 5 feet deep but was closer to 30!!!
It was a great day of riding with a total mileage of just over 100!
This evening’s campsite was at Pancake Bay – famous in our family for being the spot where the transmission in our car failed on our family road trip in 1966. We ended the day with yet another swim in Lake Superior – it beat waiting in line for the shower.
