Day 16 – Calculus 101

What do you to keep your mind sharp when you have to ride 95 miles in 80°F+ heat, along a straight road into a headwind. Today’s exercise was in calculus.

Riders A and B are riding east at 15 miles an hour into a headwind. Rider A (Bill) stops for one minute to take a picture while Rider B (Serge) continues along at 15 MPH. How long will it take Rider A to catch Rider B if Rider A resumes riding at 17 MPH?

a) 7.5 minutes?

b) before Rider B reaches the horizon?

c) 2.2 miles?

d) All of the above?

e) None of the above?

The correct answer is D. Solving this type of problem in real time, while riding, (I just stopped to take a picture or two – how long will it take to catch Serge) helped pass seemingly endless hours of today’s ride.

The highlights were that we got to enter a new province (Saskatchewan), and got to witness a wonderful change of scenery in doing so (the Highway Numbering signs changed from White to Blue, and the Highway changed from AB 9 to SK 7).

Here are two wonderful shots of the scenery in Alberta in the morning taken from the same point in theroad, first looking West and then East – not much different from yesterday’s shots…

And two more from Saskatchewan, again taken from the same spot on the road, to give you a perspective of the roads we were on.

As the prairie farmer said after returning from a visit to the Rockies, “Those mountains were nice, but they sure did block the view!” Apparently we have about two weeks more of this scenery, so we’ll have to figure out new ways to keep entertained.
