Day 14 – When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth

Today was a rest day in Drumheller Alberta. The key attractions of the day (I did laundry when I got into camp last night) were a big breakfast at a loc al restaurant, a visit to downtown Drumheller, a trip to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, and a steak and ribs dinner at a local bar.

By far the most interesting spot was the museum – this area of Alberta is world famous for both the number and the variety of relatively intact dinosaur fossils found in the canyon walls. The museum was 3 miles from our campsite and we ended up riding over 20 on our “off” day. We spent a few hours in the museum, and it was sensory overload – both massive and tiny skeletons on display of all types of dinosaur fossils. You could probably spend a week in the museum and not see everything – apparently the displays are composed of 60% - 70% actual fossil and the remainder plaster castings, as either there are pieces missing or too heavy (as in the skulls) for display.
